I couldn't test ride the Kalkhoff before committing, but Geoff gave me straightforward, unvarnished answers to my questions. The bike arrived with some minor cosmetic damage caused during shipment. After unpacking, initial setup was easy: I rotated the handlebars and adjusted the seat. Everything else (including speedo calibration) was road ready. After a quick battery charge, I was on the road My first impression is very favorable. The Panasonic drive is smooth over it's rpm range. The motor contribution in the lowest power setting is noticeable, but not strong. At higher settings, though, it's strong. At it's medium setting, I had no trouble riding 20 mph into a 10 mph breeze using the medium setting. There's no lurch when taking off from a dead stop ... impressive. The brakes are powerful and feel mechanically solid. The Shimano Deore deurailler is, well ... Shimano Deore. Shifts are precise with no lag or mis-registration.

Loving my commuter e-bike

This ebike is my go to bike for the farmers' market, the library and a whole host of errands when I might otherwise take the car. I like to make it a workout at times by using a lower assist but then there are those times when I love the power riding up that 700 feet from shopping to home. The battery recharges quickly and I can extend the length of my ride by simply turning off the power, as the bike roles along easily in the flats. Fun to ride and I love it. Get one!

I almost got one last Christmas, but was unsure about the correct size to get. Used the website to ask someone to contact me, Geoff called right away and I had my order in before hanging up the phone! We've only done one ride together, over 30 miles. I worked my tail off trying to stay in front of her, and did most of the ride, but on that long steep hill...there she goes by me, giggling and muttering something about feeling guilty to be able to climb a hill with so much less effort. Several times she rode without any power assistance. We got over 1400 ft of climbing with about 31 miles, and the battery still had two red lights when I checked it after the ride! I got my chance to ride it about 10 miles around the neighborhood next day, with a full charge on the battery. I'm really liking it and now afraid I'll need to buy another so each of us can have our own. Do you make a tandem model? I think Charlotte needs an e-bike store, and if I was running it, I would be selling Kalkhoffs!

It works great. The assist is just right - enough to make biking a little more practical, but not so much that you feel like you're getting a free ride.
Good components, too.
Here's a list of bikes I was able to test, with my notes: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/810672-Bike-Selection-IGH-and-Electric-investigation
